Poland Criticizes US Over Visa Granted to Ex-Justice Minister Ziobro

(MENAFN) Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has accused the United States of political interference after Washington granted a visa to former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, enabling him to travel despite ongoing criminal proceedings in Poland.

In an interview on Saturday, Sikorski said the Polish government viewed the decision as interference in its internal affairs and stated that he had conveyed Warsaw’s concerns directly to a senior US official.

He also alleged that Ziobro obtained a journalist visa under misleading circumstances and had signaled intentions to engage in political activity among the Polish diaspora in the United States.

The dispute comes amid efforts by Poland’s current government to maintain stable relations with the US while managing political disagreements linked to the previous administration under the Law and Justice party.

Ziobro, who previously served as both justice minister and attorney general, played a central role in controversial judicial reforms that sparked prolonged tensions between Warsaw and Brussels over rule-of-law standards within the European Union.

Polish prosecutors have filed 26 charges against him, including allegations of misuse of funds from the Justice Fund, which was intended to support crime victims but is now under scrutiny for alleged political use. Authorities have also examined procurement decisions involving surveillance technology reportedly used against opposition figures and journalists.

Ziobro has denied all allegations, claiming the case against him is politically motivated.
