FunkyMEDIA Introduces a Five-Layer Model for Measuring Brand Visibility in AI Search

New methodology separates links, brand mentions, semantic context, AI citations and AI recommendations.

POLAND, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- FunkyMEDIA has introduced a new five-layer methodology for measuring brand visibility in AI Search. The framework is designed to address a growing problem in generative search analytics: a link, a brand mention, a citation and an AI recommendation are not the same type of visibility.

The model builds on FunkyMEDIA’s ongoing research into brand mentions and AI-driven discovery, including a dataset covering more than 1.7 million online conversations collected across approximately ten years.

According to FunkyMEDIA, many current AI visibility measurements focus primarily on whether a brand appears in an AI-generated answer. The new framework examines the stages that may occur before a brand becomes a direct recommendation.

The Five Layers of AI Search Visibility
1. Link Presence
Measures whether a URL connected with a brand appears in publicly accessible online content.
2. Explicit Brand Mention
Measures whether the brand is directly named. A brand name can appear without a link, while a URL can appear without the brand being explicitly mentioned.
3. Semantic Brand Context
Examines what the brand is associated with, including services, product categories, areas of expertise, customer problems, locations, comparisons and use cases.
4. AI Citation
Measures whether a source associated with the brand is cited or referenced by an AI system when generating an answer.
5. AI Recommendation
Measures whether the AI system directly presents the brand, company, product or service as a relevant option for the user.

FunkyMEDIA summarizes the model as:
Link Presence → Brand Mention → Semantic Context → AI Citation → AI Recommendation
Why Context Matters
A central part of the methodology is the concept of a Brand Context Profile.

Two companies may receive the same number of online mentions but accumulate very different contextual signals.
One brand may repeatedly appear in discussions related to expertise, research and specialized services. Another may be mentioned mainly in unrelated directories, discount discussions or negative customer experiences.
Counting both simply as “mentions” can hide important differences in how the brands are represented across the web.
“AI visibility is not simply a question of whether a brand appears,” said Rafał Cyrański, author of the FunkyMEDIA methodology. “The more important question is what information surrounds the brand, what entities it is connected with and whether these relationships eventually contribute to citation or recommendation.”

A New Measurement Problem
Traditional SEO analytics have relied on rankings, impressions, clicks and backlinks.
AI Search introduces a different measurement challenge because generative systems can combine information from multiple sources before producing a single answer.
A user may never visit the original website. A brand may appear directly inside an AI-generated response. A source may be cited without the brand itself being recommended.
For this reason, FunkyMEDIA proposes moving from simple visibility counting toward visibility interpretation.
The framework asks not only:

Is the brand visible in AI?
but also:
Where is it visible? How is it described? What topics surround it? Is the source cited? Is the brand recommended?
Building on the FunkyMEDIA Research Lab
The five-layer model expands FunkyMEDIA’s public research program focused on AI Search, brand mentions and machine-readable brand context.
The company recently opened a public research environment based on more than 1.7 million online conversations collected over approximately ten years.
Future research will examine relationships between public brand context, AI citations and recommendation behavior across generative search platforms.
